 | Hi Friends! Normally, our posts are about specific books that express diverse voices and characters. However, I am inspired this morning by my former professor's facebook post. Carla Spataro was the kind of teacher that lit up creative writing for me! Her reading selections were varied, often feminist, and not the typical "white boys narrative." |
| But like all amazing teachers, Carla had one more (at least) lesson to offer. I have been asking myself, how can I advocate for change under the New Administration? What makes sense for me in my life? What can I do that works within my passion, what blends with the missions I am already supporting? Below please read Carla's Post this morning. |  |

| This is my most recent act of "advocacy." Yesterday, after the silencing of Sen Warren and last week's embarrassing gaffe from DJT regarding Frederick Douglass I sent the pres. 3 books on black history. I shipped them directly to the White House with a note suggesting that when DJT was finished reading these books about Douglass, Truth, and DuBois, that he share them with Mitch McConnell who could probably use a little brush up himself. I did this to support books. I did this to support Black History. It cost me less than $20. Perhaps we could all send DJT some books. We know he doesn't read--but that's not exactly the point is it? I say support black authors and people who publish black writers. I say support Black History. Send DJT a book. It's bigger and more irritating than a postcard (although I'll send one of those too). If you decide to do it let me know what titles you send. And if you don't already own the books, consider getting copies for yourself. That's what I did. #AWP17 #BlackHistBooks4Potus |
I would think any of the books mentioned in previous blogs would be great. This weekend, I'm going out and buying books that matter, written by African American Writers or illustrated by African American Illustrators, to support the education of our current President. For the record, I think I will buy appropriate books for his reading level. (Pictured below) What are you buying? What other ways can we advocate?
